What is a sinkhole?

Sinkholes are so wierd!

Sinkhole

What is a sinkhole?

A sinkhole is a hole in the ground formed when the rock underneath dissolves by groundwater.

Where do they form?

Sinkholes usually form in areas of chalk or limestone - types of rock slowly that dissolve with rain water.
Sinkhole collapses are pretty common in the American state of Florida. Virtually the whole of the state is a limestone platform.
But sinkholes are extremely rare in the UK.

What are they like?

Sinkholes can be of all different sizes ranging from just a few metres to large ones around 20 metres deep.
Collapsed sinkholes generally have steep rock sides and may have streams that then flow underground.

Exclusive audio of the jetpack flight over Dubai
Yves Rossy, who goes by the name 'Jetman', and French parachutist Vince Reffet soared together at speed, powered by jetpacks.
They put on a world-first aerial display above landmarks in Dubai, including Palm Island.
Yves built the specially developed flying suit back in 2006, using four jet-engines, which you might normally find on a small plane.
He has already used his jetpack prototype to cross the English Channel and fly over the Grand Canyon and Rio de Janeiro.
He said the display in Dunai "was the culmination of over 20 years of innovation".
'Jetman' added it "has resulted in achieving my personal dream to fly free, soaring through the sky."

                            Can you spot the piglet?
"I have never seen anything like it. I couldn't believe it when he darted straight into the sea like that," he added.
"He was completely unfazed by the bubbling surf and was in the water upwards of 10 minutes."
"He became a tiny black dot in the distance... I was just wondering whether I would have to dive in myself when he started swimming in the more shallow end of the surf, so I just ran in and grabbed him."
"He was safe and sound and in good health, in fact he did not even seem puffed out. Far fitter than many I know," said Mr Finch.

Volcano causes new island to pop out of the sea near Japan

A brand new island has popped out of the sea near to Japan.

It's tiny - about 200 metres wide - and it might not last very long because it's made out of volcanic rock that erodes quite easily.
It was caused by a volcanic eruption under the sea bed which forced lava and rock to burst through the surface of the water.
The molten rock has then cooled and hardened on the water, turning it into a mini island.
It was first spotted because of massive clouds of smoke blowing out into the air, and when coastguards went to investigate they saw land that wasn't there before.
It's not been named yet because experts want to wait and see if it will stick around, but if it does it's a new mark to make on the map!

Miniature books on display in Scotland

Some of the world's smallest books have been put on display at the National Library of Scotland.

A book next to a penny. The book is only slightly larger than the penny.
Robert Burns's poetry also deserved a miniature book

One of the books is a copy of Old King Cole which measures less than 1mm in height!

A tiny book

It was published in 1985 and held the world record for the smallest printed book for 20 years.
It is one of about 80 miniature books which will go on display in Edinburgh until 17 November.
A miniature book is generally defined as one that is less than 7.5cm tall.

Why would anybody publish such tiny books?

In the 1870s, the Glasgow book publisher David Bryce & Son became one of the most successful miniature book publishers in the world.
They found that books sold thousands upon thousands more copies if they were miniature.
Others, like the tiny copy of Old King Cole, are simply published for a bit of fun.

Mystery postbox appears on bridge

A red postbox that mysteriously appeared in the middle of a bridge is going to be removed.

The postbox appeared a few weeks ago on the side of Sonning Bridge, which crosses the River Thames in Berkshire.
Royal Mail said the postbox is not real and any letters posted would not get delivered.
People living nearby say the postbox is a mystery. Some people think it was put up as a piece of art.
Local councillor Mike Haines said he thought it was a "bit of fun" but the postbox will have to come down.
The Sonning Bridge is a "listed" structure which means it is protected and any alterations must be approved by the council.
