Harry Potter chair sold at auction in the US

The chair that Harry Potter author JK Rowling sat on while writing the first two books has sold in the US for around £280,000.

JK Rowling wrote the first two Harry Potter books in this chair.

She had picked up the chair for free in Edinburgh before the books were published, and then had hand-painted them.

The chair has messages written from JK Rowling, including: "O, you may not find me pretty but don't judge on what you see" and "I wrote Harry Potter while sitting on this chair".

The chair also comes with a letter written by the author, saying that the chair hurt her back.

It reads: "I was given four mismatched dining room chairs in 1995 and this was the comfiest one, which is why it ended up stationed permanently in front of my typewriter, supporting me while I typed out Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. My nostalgic side is quite sad to see it go, but my back isn't."

Zayn Malik's debut solo album tops UK chart

Zayn has topped the UK album chart with his first solo album, Mind of Mine.

The former 1D singer knocked Adele's 25 from the top spot, after selling over 4,000 more albums. It follows the success of Pillowtalk, the record's lead single, which went straight to number one in February.

On hearing the news Zayn said: "I want to thank all the fans and my team"

"It's mind-blowing"

Zayn said "I can't believe that I have managed to achieve this as a solo artist.

"I am very proud coming from Bradford achieving this in my home country."

He added: "It's mind-blowing to me. I don't take the support I have received for granted. My life at 23 could have been very different."

Stars pay tribute to Motorhead's Lemmy

Music stars and celebrities have paid tribute to Motorhead frontman Lemmy, who has died at the age of 70.

Lemmy died at home in Los Angeles on Monday, two days after learning he had cancer.

He formed Motorhead in 1975 and recorded 22 albums, including the classic Ace of Spades.

The band said on its Facebook page: "Our mighty, noble friend Lemmy has passed away after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer."

The band added: "We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren't words."

They urged fans to play Lemmy's music loud and "have a drink or few", saying: "Celebrate the life this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself.

"He would want exactly that."

Lemmy, who was the only constant member of Motorhead, had been diagnosed with cancer on Saturday - two days after his 70th birthday.

'Warrior and legend'

Todd Singerman, Motorhead's manager, told the BBC News channel that Lemmy had had cancer "in his brain and neck" and that his sudden death had come as "a massive shock".

He said the singer died while sitting in front of his favourite video game with his family.

Singerman described Lemmy as "the pinnacle, he's up there with one of his idols, Elvis".

"He was was one of the last true rock stars left, this guy lived it every day."

While Lemmy was known for his hard-living lifestyle and his penchant for Jack Daniels, Singerman joked that in recent years, the frontman had "switched to vodka and orange - he thought it was healthier!"

Adele's 25 makes UK chart history with 800,000 album sales

Adele's new album 25 has sold more than 800,000 copies in its first week of release - the highest ever figure for a single UK chart week.

Adele's first-week sales were more than eight times those for any other album this year

The album shifted more copies than the next 86 albums in the chart combined, and has become the first album to sell more than 100,000 downloads in a week.

In fact, 252,423 of the album's 800,307 sales were digital with the rest on CD.

Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot said: "The statistics surrounding the album are staggering."

He added: "No album has ever sold 800,000 copies to reach number one in the history of British music."

The previous record was held by Oasis's Be Here Now, which reached number one with sales of 696,000 in 1997. However that album only went on sale three days before the end of the chart week.

Adele's record-breaking sales

• Before this, no album had sold 100,000 copies in a single week this year. Adele's 25 has sold 800,307.
• That is more than the combined sales of the last 19 number one albums in the weeks they topped the chart.
• More than 300,000 people bought 25 on its first day of release.
• Ed Sheeran held the previous record for weekly digital album sales, with 95,709. Adele's 25 has eclipsed that with 252,423 downloads.
• 25 has reached double platinum status already.
• It still has some way to go to match the sales of Adele's last album 21, which is owned by 4.8 million people in the UK.

One Direction picked up the top award at the American Music Awards winning the Artist of the Year award for the second year in a row.

They also won best group even though they're due to take a break next year.

MTV Video Music Awards: Taylor Swift picks up four prizes

Taylor Swift took home four MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) on Sunday night at a big event in Los Angeles, USA.

She won the night's biggest prize, the Video of the Year award, for 'Bad Blood'.

"I'm just happy that in 2015 we live in a world where boys can play princesses and girls can play soldiers," the 25-year-old singer said accepting her award.

Princess Charlotte: Norfolk church creates knitted christening

Knitters have recreated Princess Charlotte's christening in wool as part of a church fundraising festival.

The replica royal event is at St Peter and St Paul's church in Norfolk - one of six churches taking part in a Blossom and Yarn Festival.

Over 11,000 squares were used to create themed scenes for the six churches.

The christening scene has been recreated in wool at the church in Griston

Woolen Prince George even has a knitted teddy bear.

The Bishop of Norwich said he was full of admiration because he "couldn't knit a bishop".

Prince Harry - who was unable to attend the event at Church of St Mary Magdalene at the Queen's Sandringham estate last Sunday - is in attendance at the knitted version.

Most of the figures and many other items, including roses, small animals and cakes, were made from 10cm knitted squares.

More than 31 human figures were created by more than 100 knitters.

The Simpsons say divorce rumours are 'baseless'

They are one of TV's longest married couples, but of late there have been rumours that it's divorce-ville for Homer and Marge Simpson.

Not true, says the animated couple.

In a video posted online, called Together Forever, Marge says: "Homie and I are here to address baseless rumours that we are going to split up."

The rumour-mill kicked in after Al Jean, one of the original writers of the show, said that there could be a legal separation for the pair.

He made the comments in an interview with Variety magazine, which discussed various future storylines.

Marge and Homer have been married for 26 series of the cult TV show.

In the Youtube post, their first official statement on their marriage, Marge goes on to explain how the story was first reported before news spread around the world.

Homer then goes on to ask why "news media guys can't cover more important things".

"Now listen here, Marjorie and I are as solid as a rock," he adds.

Surfer Garrett MacNamara rides 'weather bomb' wave

Surfers have flocked to Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal, to try and catch massive waves generated by an Atlantic storm that hit the UK.

Surfer Garrett MacNamara tried to repeat his performance of 2011 when he surfed the world's biggest wave at 30 metres high.

Unfortunately the 'weather bomb' waves off the coast of Nazaré only reached 20 metres - but he still managed to impress.

Malala Yousafzai wins Nobel Peace Prize 2014

Pakistani schoolgirl campaigner Malala Yousafzai has won the Nobel Peace Prize, one of the world's most respected awards.

She has been recognised for her hard work promoting the right for girls to have an education.

The prize judges said about Malala: "Through her heroic struggle she has become a leading spokesperson for girls' rights to education."

Malala won it jointly with Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi.

Malala, 17, is the youngest person to ever get the Nobel Peace Prize.

She was attacked by the Taliban, an extremist group, in Pakistan two years ago for her campaign work.

She now goes to school in Birmingham and continues her campaigning.

What is the Nobel Peace Prize?

What have Albert Einstein, Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama got in common? They've all won a Nobel Prize.

They're given out every year to people or organisations who have achieved amazing things in different areas.

The Nobel Peace Prize is probably the most famous, but there are others, including ones for medicine, science and economics.

The Nobel Prize is named after Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite.

One Direction announce new single Steal My Girl

One Direction news has come thick and fast in the past seven days.

First, they announced their fourth album, yes they called it Four, then the boys released Fireproof as a free download and now they've named the lead single from their new album.

Steal My Girl, which Louis "absolutely cannot wait for you guys to hear" will have its first play on 29 September.

It will be officially released to buy on 12 October and the boys hope it will become their fourth UK number 1 single.

A huge bug jumped on James Rodriguez at World Cup quarter-final

A bug in Brazil obviously knows a talented footballer when it sees one - after a giant beastly jumped on superstar James Rodriquez at the World Cup.

The insect latched onto the playmaker during the quarter-final and proved to be a lucky charm as Rodriguez tucked away his penalty.

In Brazil they call this bug Esperanza (hope). And it really was connected with the Colombians hope to pass the quarter finals with the penalty scored by the excellent player, James Rodriguez is.

The bug - which looks a bit like a large grasshopper - jumped on the Columbian after he scored a penalty during his team's quarter final against Brazil.

It was really big and disgusting!

'Magnetic man' breaks spoon record

Do you keep spoons in a drawer or cupboard? Well not this guy... he carries them on his body!

Etibar Elchyev, 41, dubbed the ‘magnet man’, managing to secure 53 metal spoons around his neck and chest setting the world record for the most spoons balanced on a human body.

Elchiyev, who llives in Tbilisi in Georgia, created the spoon record in 2011.

But he has no plans to stop there. "When the time comes I am going [to move] an airplane, then an empty train carriage, something like this, I won't reveal all my cards at once," he said

Nelson Mandela- Madiba- has died aged 95

People around the world have reacting to the news that Nelson Mandela, one of history's greatest leaders, has died after a long illness aged 95.

Mandela led South Africa out of the racist system of apartheid, and into democracy, becoming the country's first black president.

He had been receiving intensive medical care at home for a lung infection after three months in hospital.

Announcing the news on South African TV President Jacob Zuma said: "Our nation has lost its greatest son."

"Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss."

Mandela's story is an incredible journey - from prison to presidency.

After being jailed for 27 years he became South Africa's first ever black president.

He went on to play an important role in promoting peace and equality across the globe.

World leaders, celebrities and ordinary people have been paying their tributes to him.

Prince William, American President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and sports stars David Beckham and Usain Bolt are among who've said how he inspired them. See more of that by Clicking here.

Inspiring kids

School children in the UK have been giving their reaction to the news.

Kids from Walworth Academy, in London, have been in touch with the BBC's School Report.

Hawa, in year 8, said: "When I found out that Nelson Mandela passed away I was in so much shock. He was a leader, a father and a husband. He was my hero."

Danny, in year 9 , said he is "very emotional and upset. However, I am happy that his legacy will live on".

Khalil said: "He was one of the most influential people of all time. Without him many black politicians would not be in power today, like Barack Obama."

And other pupils from Whalley Range in Manchester added their voices to the tributes.

They said: "As a school we are commemorating Nelson Madela's memory through a whole school minute silence and a tribute video that our media team have created."

Aya, a year 8 student, said: "Everyone is going to remember the difference he has made - He's a true pioneer for Black peoples' rights. People like me wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for people like Mandela fighting for our rights.'

And Maryan added: "He's a true legend and he's proven if you fight for your rights, you can make a difference."

Famous 'Titanic' violin sold at auction for record price

A violin that sank with the Titanic over a hundred years ago has been sold at auction for a record price.

The rosewood instrument was played by the Titanic's bandleader Wallace Hartley when the famous ship sank in 1912.

It's been described as one of the most important objects ever discovered that sank with the ship.

It sold for £900,000!

It is the single most valuable piece of Titanic memorabilia, so far.

Other items that were sold included his sheet music and the bag he kept it in.

Wallace Hartley kept on playing while the Titanic was sinking in the icy ocean on 15th April 1912 and died in the sinking.

Liam and Louis took time out from their tour of Australia to go surfing on Whale Beach in Sydney.

They were soon spotted by adoring fans and lifeguards had to step in to keep them away.

Even the news helicopter from Channel 7 News showed up to snap the boys riding the waves.

Malala Yousafzi has been tipped for Nobel Peace Prize

Malala Yousafzai , the Pakistani girl shot by the Taliban on her way to school has been tipped to win a Nobel Peace Prize.

If Malala wins the 16-year-old will be the youngest person ever to win the award.

Malala has been nominated for her work to get education for girls in Pakistan.

The education campaigner is among the favourites to win  the award at the event in Sweden.

Barack Obama and Nelson Mandela have won the award in the past.

Malala has been fighting for girls' right to education in Pakistan and all over the world. She's a really brave girl who said in the United Nations meeting that she is not going to give up her dreams though she has received threats from the fundamentalist Talibans what made her family move to London where they live now. 

Usain Bolt sings on BBC Radio 5 Live

Usain Bolt says he hasn't decided whether to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next summer.

The world's fastest man said if he does take part, he'll only compete in the 200 metre sprint.

If he does retire from running, Usain could always pursue a career in pop music.

He surprised radio listeners by singing a famous song by fellow Jamaican Bob Marley during an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live.
