Stars pay tribute to Motorhead's Lemmy

Music stars and celebrities have paid tribute to Motorhead frontman Lemmy, who has died at the age of 70.

Lemmy died at home in Los Angeles on Monday, two days after learning he had cancer.
He formed Motorhead in 1975 and recorded 22 albums, including the classic Ace of Spades.
The band said on its Facebook page: "Our mighty, noble friend Lemmy has passed away after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer."
The band added: "We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren't words."
They urged fans to play Lemmy's music loud and "have a drink or few", saying: "Celebrate the life this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself.
"He would want exactly that."
Lemmy, who was the only constant member of Motorhead, had been diagnosed with cancer on Saturday - two days after his 70th birthday.

'Warrior and legend'

Todd Singerman, Motorhead's manager, told the BBC News channel that Lemmy had had cancer "in his brain and neck" and that his sudden death had come as "a massive shock".
He said the singer died while sitting in front of his favourite video game with his family.
Singerman described Lemmy as "the pinnacle, he's up there with one of his idols, Elvis".
"He was was one of the last true rock stars left, this guy lived it every day."
While Lemmy was known for his hard-living lifestyle and his penchant for Jack Daniels, Singerman joked that in recent years, the frontman had "switched to vodka and orange - he thought it was healthier!"

Fossils of Star Wars-like mammal found in Spain

Fossils of a mammal that looks like something out of the Star Wars films have been found in Spain.

Researchers discovered the fossils at the La Retama fossil site within the Loranca Basin in the Iberian Peninsula.
The first palaeomerycids – which all have three horns - were originally described on the basis of fossils from Goergensmund, Germany.
Since then, others have been founds across Europe, with a diverse range found around the Iberian Peninsula and stretching to China.
To work out how the new find fits into the group, Israel M. Sánchez and his team paid particular attention to the creature's T-shaped horn, as well as cranial fragments and teeth. (MailOnline)

It is part of an extinct family of animals related to the giraffe living up to 16 million years ago and has been named in honour of Star Wars character Padme Amidala due to the similarity of its horn to the character's headwear in The Phantom Menace.

Researchers paid particular attention to the creature's T-shaped horn, as well as cranial fragments and teeth. Cranial remains of Xenokeryx amidalae, including the strange T-shaped horn (A and C) are shown above

Adele's 25 makes UK chart history with 800,000 album sales

Adele's new album 25 has sold more than 800,000 copies in its first week of release - the highest ever figure for a single UK chart week.

Adele
Adele's first-week sales were more than eight times those for any other album this year

The album shifted more copies than the next 86 albums in the chart combined, and has become the first album to sell more than 100,000 downloads in a week.
In fact, 252,423 of the album's 800,307 sales were digital with the rest on CD.
Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot said: "The statistics surrounding the album are staggering."
He added: "No album has ever sold 800,000 copies to reach number one in the history of British music."
The previous record was held by Oasis's Be Here Now, which reached number one with sales of 696,000 in 1997. However that album only went on sale three days before the end of the chart week.
Adele - 25

Adele's record-breaking sales

  • Before this, no album had sold 100,000 copies in a single week this year. Adele's 25 has sold 800,307.
  • That is more than the combined sales of the last 19 number one albums in the weeks they topped the chart.
  • More than 300,000 people bought 25 on its first day of release.
  • Ed Sheeran held the previous record for weekly digital album sales, with 95,709. Adele's 25 has eclipsed that with 252,423 downloads.
  • 25 has reached double platinum status already.
  • It still has some way to go to match the sales of Adele's last album 21, which is owned by 4.8 million people in the UK.

What is Bonfire Night? The history of November 5

Why do they have Bonfire Night and fireworks displays every November 5 in the UK?

Fireworks display

What is Bonfire Night?

On November 5 people across the UK celebrate Bonfire Night.
There are small fireworks parties in back gardens along with big organised displays in public parks.
The reason they do it is because it's the anniversary of an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament led by a man called Guy Fawkes.
It's called the Gunpowder Plot, and bonfires are lit to burn the "Guy" - a kind of dummy that represents Fawkes.

What was the Gunpowder Plot?

Guy (Guido) Fawkes led the Gunpowder plot in 1605. It was a plan to blow up King James I and his government.
Fawkes and his group put 36 barrels of gunpowder in cellars under the Houses of Parliament in London, ready to set off a massive explosion.
One member of the group sent a letter to his friend who worked in Parliament, warning him to stay away on November 5.

The King's supporters got hold of the letter and the plot was rumbled!
Guards broke into the cellars where the gunpowder plotters were waiting. They were arrested, tortured and executed.
The Gunpowder Plot was about religion. England was a Protestant country, and the plotters were Catholic.
The group wanted to return England to the Catholic faith. They thought they could do this by killing King James I and his ministers.

The history of Halloween - how it all started

Halloween began as the festival of Samhain. It was part of the ancient Celtic religion in Britain and other parts of Europe.

At the end of summer, the Celts thought the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts and spirits got really thin.
This meant weird creatures with strange powers could wander about on Earth.
The Celts had a big party. It was all about scaring away the ghosts and spirits.
Later, with the Christian religion, the day became known as All Hallows' Eve - the day before All Saints' Day on 1 November.

America picks up the pace

It's in America that Halloween has really taken off.
Irish immigrants to the United States raised the popularity of Halloween during the 19th century.
During the 20th century it became more and more popular, with traditions like pumpkin carving and trick or treating becoming part of TV shows, books and movies. (CBBC Newsround)

Stray dogs on the rise in Greece

Animal charities are warning that there are now more than one million stray animals on the streets in Greece.

Greece has borrowed loads of money over the last 10 years or so - both from European banks and from other countries' governments.
Now the country owes billions of pounds, and has signed a deal to help try to get it out of debt.
But this has had a knock on effect on the people living in Greece, and has meant that some of them don't have a lot of money.
Animal charities think this might be one of the reasons why there are more stray dogs and cats on the streets in Greece, as their owners can no longer afford to take care of them.
A group of vets from the UK has flown out to try to help rescue some of the stray animals.

'Biggest' Stonehenge site discovered

Archaeologists have found around 100 huge standing stones buried near Stonehenge.

Experts think the discovery could be the 'biggest' prehistoric monument ever built in Britain.
The stones were uncovered using special equipment that scans below the Earth's surface.
Researchers said finding the stones was "fantastically lucky".

Special radars were used to find the large stones at Durrington Walls

What is Stonehenge?

  • It's a circle of massive stones, on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, in the south west of England.
  • No-one knows exactly why it was built but there is a link to the sun's movements during the year and there are burial sites nearby.
  • It's thought to have been built in prehistoric times, with the stones being put up about 2,500 BC.
  • People go to the site at certain times of year, during the summer and winter solstices, when the sun lines up with gaps in the stones.
Large stones at Durrington Walls
The stones could have measured up to 4.5m in height
The latest discovery was made about 1.8 miles (3km) from Stonehenge, on the edge of the Durrington Walls "henge", or bank.
It's an area which had not yet been studied by researchers and it's thought the stones may have originally measured up to 4.5m (14ft) in height.
Lead researcher, Vince Gaffney said the stones were "lost to archaeology" but found thanks to modern technology.

The findings are being announced later on the first day of the British Science Festival being held at the University of Bradford.
